Every time you get to hear of a Uganda safari to Kasese, what trickles your imagination is the great Mountains of the Moon and yes, its alright to for a Uganda hiking safari experience to be on top of your to-do list in Mountain Rwenzori National park. However besides mountain hiking during your safari Uganda to this park, there are so many other Uganda safari attractions that can you see and Uganda safari activities that you can do while on a Uganda trip to Rwenzori National Park.

In the next series of articles, I would like to share with some of these Uganda safari attractions in Rwenzori besides the mountain itself. Let’s begin with the Bakonzo people.

bakonzo 2

Origin of the Bakonzo

Majorly, there are two theories that can explain the existence of the Bakonzo. One theory suggests that, the Bakonzo migrated from mt Elgon led by Kintu who is believed to the first Muganda with the rest of Baganda people and moved west wards but unlike the Baganda tribe of people who decided to settle on the shores of Lake Victoria, the Bakonzo continued migrating further westwards and finally settled on the lower slopes of mt Rwenzori because the place had the same climatic conditions just like mt Elgon where they had come from. Their migration is believed to have occurred between 1000AD -1300AD. The other theory that explains their existence suggests that the Bakonzo have never migrated from any other place as they have lived only in this region because it is believed that the first Bakonzo emerged from the caves of mt Rwenzori and settled on its slopes then intermarried each other to give birth to the entire Bakonzo community.

Circumcision and Marriage among the Bakonzo

Bakonzo carry out circumcision of the boy child as sign to mark transition from childhood to adulthood, initially, the circumcision practice was carried out after long intervals of between 15-18 years and this meant that even boys as young as 5 years had to be circumcised because the next phase of circumcision would arrive when they are already mature hence they needed to be circumcised in order to get married as girls would only be married to circumcised boys. In recent times, circumcision can be done by anybody, anytime and anywhere unlike long ago where there were rituals to followed. Long ago, circumcision among the Bakonzo, circumcision had to be done by the Bamba as it was a taboo for a Mukonzo to circumcise a fellow Mukonzo.

bakonzo

Just like many other African societies, when it came to courtship and marriage among the Bakonzo, the parents of the children had to do the scouting for a good suitor for their child. When a child was born, other families with young children that would want to have their child marry a child from this family brought gifts to the family with a newborn child as a way of showing their interest in the newborn child, the parents of the newborn child would carefully examine the gifts brought to them from other families to determine a family that would potentially take their child when time came for marriage. This, therefore, meant that there was no courtship done by the young couple before marriage was conducted. Courtship could be done by men who had the potential to marry a second wife as they had to look for the second wife all by themselves. This was all possible since polygamy was allowed in the Bakonzo culture.

Virginity was highly treasured and girls that conceived before marriage were killed. During marriage, the boy’s family had to pay the bridal price and this consisted of mainly goats and animal skin and a digging stick. The digging stick symbolized the girl’s labour force that has been lost by the bride’s family, while the animal skin was to replace the one she had used as she was growing up and in case of a divorce, all the bridewealth paid by the boy’s family had to be returned, and this made it difficult for divorces to happen as the bride’s family would not want to return the bridewealth they had attained from their girl child’s marriage.

bakonzo 5

After getting married the young couple was expected to have children and unlike the other African tribes, the Bakonzo have a unique naming culture in which each child is named basing on his or her birth position and sex as well. Next time we get to meet we will explore the Bakonzo naming culture.

GIRAFFES ED

However, the wildlife reserves here have been facing a number of challenges which made them less appealing to tourists on a safari in Uganda to visit. Some of the challenges they faced included reducing stock of wild animals here due to poaching, encroachment on the wildlife reserve land by locals and inaccessibility of these wildlife reserves due to poor transport infrastructure network in this region. However various stakeholders right from the government have done a commendable job to see that most of these problems are fixed so as to allow tourism to flourish in this tourism corridor.

Over the past few years UWA has restocked these reserve with numerous wild animals ranging from impalas and giraffes from other well established national parks such as Murchison falls parks where they translocated 15 giraffes from to Pian Upe wildlife reserve.

In the same spirit a few days ago, Uganda Wildlife Authority embarked on a campaign to evict 4000 people from Bokora & Matheniko wildlife reserves.

A group of people from various districts of Teso settled in the game reserve in 2014 under the guidance of the local leaders. They engaged in commercial agriculture and also constructed semi-permanent structures on the land.

A team of UWA assisted by the police and other security organs on Monday started evicting the group which had encroached on the protected area.

According to Charles Wilfred Okula, the warden Security and Law Enforcement Matheniko- Bokora wildlife reserve, the group will leave the game reserve by the end of the year. Tom Omongole who has already left the area for Kumi said he was disappointed that they were ordered to leave before harvesting his crops.

eviction in Bokora-MathenikoHowever, this move has faced deep resistance from the locals who own food crop gardens in the contested lands “I have nine acres of cassava in the garden. We asked to be allowed to wait for our crops to get ready but to no avail. They handled us like criminals,” said Omongole on phone.

“I am now landless, I had sold my share of land in Kumi in order to acquire a large portion in Kotido and now I have been thrown out without any compensation,” added Lomongole. However, Okula says that those with crops will return to harvest them later and those who bought the land illegally should follow up from those who sold it to them.

“I encourage them to go back or settle anywhere outside a protected area. They can also go to the containment areas in Opopongo, Kalosarich and Kobebe in Abim, Kotido and Moroto respectively. The Kidepo Regional Police Commander, Stephen Onencan confirmed the orders by UWA for the community to move out of the protected area. He said police had not yet registered any cases of violence resulting from the eviction.

Making a Uganda trip to any of these reserves as part of your Uganda safari is can be done especially when using road transport. However, during such a Uganda adventure, you’re advised to use 4×4 cars for hire which is study enough to cope with the somewhat this rather long journey as these reserves are about 520km or 12 hour drive away from Kampala. Mombasa has managed to take to be recognized as given the numerous unique attractions that are found in this city.

Let me give you some of the Mombasa highlight attractions to look out for while on a tour to this coastal town.

Heller Park

Created in 1971 by Dr Heller Park when he ingeniously managed to transform the deserted limestone quarries into a wonderful exotic marine park. Being a naturalist and agronomist, Dr Rene managed to artistically integrate a diverse range of wildlife into an ecosystem in which each living animal there had a role to play and did this by adding nutrients to the soil and also planted trees, added a fish farm, and created a wildlife park which is now a hit with animal lovers. Other wildlife animals found here include giraffes, Cape buffalo, zebras, waterbucks, and hippos. However what made this park a favourite place to visit on Kenya tour was because of a famous interspecies couple that became an Internet sensation after the 130-year-old tortoise, Mzee, adopted Owen, an orphaned hippo. Birds are also abundant in the park. More than 160 species have been introduced to the area including weaver birds, cranes, pelicans, and storks. Walking and cycling paths wind through the groves of casuarina, and a reptile park, palm garden, and crocodile pens are other attractions. A highlight is the giraffe feeding, but be sure to check the times before visiting. Nature trails lead to a butterfly pavilion.

Mombasa marine park

Mombasa Marine National Park is the most popular of the marine protected areas due to ease of accessibility and a favourite among Mombasa snorkelers and scuba divers due to its abundant marine life, beautiful blue water and spectacular coral reefs. The high number of north coast accommodations in Nyali and Bamburi draws in thousands of tourists from around the world. As part of African Mecca’s seaside offerings, we organize marine life activities and boating trips into the park aboard a dive speedboat or a glass-bottomed boat. The Mombasa Park is one of the later gazetted marine parks in Kenya and is a combination of a national park, which covers almost 4 square miles (10 sq. km), and a national reserve, covering a little less than 80 square miles (200 sq. km). Mombasa Marine Park is one of many that work together to preserve the fragile coral reef on the Kenyan coast that stretches for 143 miles (230 kilometres) along the shoreline. The reef plays an important role in the ocean ecosystem by providing safety and food to almost one million species of marine life. The various colours, shapes and sizes of the coral are incredible and some of the species that you may see in the Indian Ocean are the brain coral, pavona coral, open-branched stag’s horn coral, Acropora coral and Favia coral.

Exploring-The-Beautiful-Sights-Sounds-Of-Kampala- Owino Market.

Many people who visit Uganda and make a Kampala city tour have always been fascinated by our way of lifestyle which is quite simple but rather unique. One way in which Ugandans really get to stand out is the way they love doing shopping and if you think when we talk about shopping in Ugand a we mean finding a hundred of people flooding a chain supermarket or an uptown mall pushing shopping carts while picking from an assortment of collection of goods, well am sorry to disappoint you because Ugandan shopping is way different from your imagination.

Owino market 2

To really have a comprehensive understanding of what  I mean when I speak of the Ugandan version of shopping all you need is a Kampala day tour to Owino market.

Origins of Owino Market

Located just a few metres outside both the old and the new taxi park, Owino market is really just a continuation of the frenzy and chaos from these taxi parks and probably even doubled with no extra charges involved. Owino market is the largest market in Uganda, it was created in 1972 after the displacement of about 320 market vendors from Nakasero market due to lack of space in the uptown Nakasero market. Owino market got baptized with that name from an elderly man called Owino who used to sell roasted maize and sweet potatoes from where owino market stands today.

As of today Owino market has over 30000 vendors of which close to 70% are women. Every day, this market is bombarded by close 150000 people from all walks of life and all social classes who are looking for the best bargain on commodities because in this market, you can literally find anything that you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the entire city at the best price. From really cheap second hand clothes and shoes from Europe, America and Asia to food items to art and craft items to fake or third class products like shoes and clothes from China. This market is a hotbed of just about everything and anything, you name it and this market will have it ready for you on the go.Owino market 3

Shopping in Owino market

Whilst inside this market, anything can be got so long as you can navigate its seemingly never-ending maze to find what you want. In Owino market, it’s so easy to enter with someone and you completely lose touch with this person until you get out. If you aren’t a frequent visitor to this market, it’s very possible for you to enter it from an entrance on one street and come out of it from completely a different exit and on another street all together without intending to do so.

It’s probably important for me to warn you in advance to hold tight onto your belongings while in here or not come here wearing classy, expensive and flashy items like jewellery and watches because as you navigate the maze in this market, they might simply vanish in thin air without you ever noticing that they are gone till you are out of it!  But the truth of the matter is, pickpockets here are many as well as con artists and even myself, I was once a victim of their acts of magic or deceit yet though that alone can’t deter from having a classic Ugandan shopping experience during your Kampala day trip. All in all, Owino market is an adventure of its own especially if you are into downtown shopping hobby, this is a perfect place for to be as you seek to find anything that can be sold at really a cheap price. I guarantee you that the pros of Owino outweigh the cons of shopping here if you’re to consider them logically.

Uganda Tourism board hires Koshie Mills to Promote Destination Uganda to Hollywood and the Rest of the World

Uganda Tourism board hires Koshie Mills to Promote Destination Uganda to Hollywood and the Rest of the World

All people who have visited Uganda-my dear motherland! Have their own fairytale stories to tell about this country which has had an astounding impact on the hearts of many Africa safari makers who have dared to make a Uganda safari to this incredibly beautiful country that’s so awesome to see.

koshie mils - Copy

Regardless of the numerous attraction that Uganda has, it has not yet fully yet established itself as the real powerhouse of awesome Africa safari adventures and this is mainly due to lack of enough of exposure to a wide range of Africa safari tour enthusiasts who would like to make an Africa trip. However this also is about to change as the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB)- an agency that’s mandated with the role of marketing Uganda as a tourism destination, has come up with several marketing strategies aimed at promoting destination Uganda as a preferred Africa tour destination to many travellers making Africa tours.

Some of these strategies include

Conducting annual tourism exhibition and this is aimed at enabling various international tour operators and travellers easily meet local tour operators who they can work with run their Uganda gorilla safaris or Uganda wildlife tours or Uganda birding safaris. The next Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo is scheduled to take place in February 2020.

UTB has also hired 3international marketing firms in the UK, North America and Germany, Austria and Switzerland to market the country in those destinations. These firms are PHG Consulting Firm in North America, Kamageo in UK and Ireland and KPRN for Germany Austria and Switzerland

UTB has also collaborated with different high profile celebrities both local and international to act as Uganda tourism ambassadors these include Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian, Edy Kenzo, Zari Hassan and many more.

Koshie mills 6The latest strategy in this regard is that UTB has started a pitch through Hollywood power broker, Koshie Mills, aimed at promoting Uganda as a tourist destination to the rest of the world. The two parties also launched a project dubbed Back To The Source aiming to craft itineraries that speak to the African American cultural and travel requirements. This happened last week as the Tourism Body hosted Koshie Mills together with an entourage from Hollywood and USA

UTB’s marketing manager, Clare Mugabi claims that the initiative with Koshie will help Uganda meet the target of 4m tourists by 2020.

“We want to see more American, black Americans coming into Ugandan for tourism purposes, to enjoy the country and above all, invest in the country. Many of these people have a humanitarian heart and very good jobs,” Mugabi said. “We want to work with these people to present to them the different tourism activities they can invest in,” she added.

“Koshie who has been to on a Uganda wildlife tour to Karamoja and was blown away by the experience she got there, so we are very hopeful that when she goes back she will want to invest in that community. We want to work with her and the different celebrities,” Mugabi said.

On her part, Koshie said that Uganda is a ‘paradise and feels like home.’ And will look for every opportunity and space to ‘shout out loud about the beauty of Uganda.”

koshie milss 3UTB also intends to use Ugandan Hollywood movie star Ntare Mwine who was appointed the country’s tourism ambassador. “Ntare is of Ugandan descent, he was appointed by the ministry of tourism as the cultural tourism ambassador in the North American market. He has a big following,” Mugabi said.

However, its not only Uganda which is undertaking aggressive tourism marketing, our immediate neighbours in South West, Rwanda are also busy partnering with big soccer teams in Europe to market destination Rwanda and these include PSG and Arsenal.

Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable national park records an increase in the gorilla population

Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable national park records an increase in the gorilla population

Uganda’s Bwindi impenetrable national park records an increase in the gorilla population. For over 3 decades, conservationists in the 3 countries of Rwanda, Uganda and Congo have been undertaking a pain sticking work of delicate and super monitoring of the numbers and breeding process of the mountain gorillas that are found in these above-mentioned countries as this species of great apes was on the verge of extinction as its numbers were below 1000 hence classified as critically endangered. These gorillas were and are still found in 2 independent sectors one which the Virunga Massif and the Bwindi Serambwe sector.

What are the chances of seeing Mountain Gorillas in Uganda? – Uganda Safari News

The Virunga massif consist of 3 different protected areas which are Volcanoes National Park  Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park Uganda and Virunga National Park Congo. The second sector has 2 protected areas which include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and also Serambwe National Reserve in Congo

The plight of gorillas first popped up on the international after a decade long of conservation works of Primatologist Dian Fossey who was based in the Volcanoes ranges of Rwanda in the 1960s-1980s.

Due to increased interest in conservation of these wild gorillas by the 3 state governments since these gorillas attracted quite a sizeable number of tourists to visit these countries to undertake gorilla safaris and also the conservation world, Different countries developed agencies to monitor the gorillas, in Uganda, this role was played by Uganda wildlife Authority, Rwanda Tourism Board in Rwanda and l’Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature

With the help of donor funding, population censuses have been held at different time intervals and these have always registered an increment in the gorilla numbers in these 2 gorilla regions.

In the Virunga massif the gorillas have been counted 5 times with the first one being in 1981 when there were only 254 gorillas, the second census was in 1989 and it recorded 320 gorillas the third was in 2003  was registered 380 gorillas in 2011 virunga massif had 480 and in the last census was in 2018 and it recorded 640 in the same area.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Forest

The bwindi sector has also had a gorilla census conducted 5 times starting in 1997 followed by in 2002, 2006, 2011 and now in 2018 with the first census recording less than 250 of these majestic beings.

In 2018 another gorilla survey was carried out in Bwindi Serambwe transboundary and it registered 459 mountain gorillas, the largest number of mountain gorillas ever recorded in one of the two remaining areas where this Endangered great ape is still found.

This census covered  an area of 340 km2 including Bwindi impenetrable national Park Uganda and Serambwe National Reserve Congo, 459 individual gorillas were found in 50 groups and as 13 solitary individuals. This is compared with an estimated 400 individual gorillas in 36 groups and as 16 solitary individuals from a survey of the same area in 2011.This is the fifth population count for this area, and the first to include Sarambwe Nature Reserve.

How was the survey conducted?

Bwindi tops 25 of the most beautiful places around the world by CNN -Uganda Safari News

As in the previous mountain gorilla census conducted in the Virunga Massif, survey teams walked pre- determined “recces” (reconnaissance trails) ensuring a thorough coverage of all forest areas to sweep the Bwindi-Sarambwe and search for signs of gorillas, other key mammals, and human activities. When fresh gorilla signs were detected, the teams followed the gorilla trail to locate three recent night nest sites. A teach of these nest sites, the teams collected fecal samples from nests.

The process was completed twice first from March to May 2018 (62 days) and second from October to December 2018 (60 days). A second sweep allows to find gorillas that were undetected during the first sweep and thus provides more reliable numbers of gorillas. Fecal samples were analyzed genetically to determine individual genotypes.

The survey teams also collected data on signs and sightings of select mammals, such as chimpanzee and elephants, and human activities, such as snares or tree cutting. While exercising caution due to the limitations of the study, there were no indications of declines in populations for the select mammals surveyed, including elephants, since 2011.

The survey was conducted by the Protected Area Authorities of Uganda and DRC (Uganda Wildlife Authority and l’Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature, respectively) under the framework of the Greater Virunga Transboundary Collaboration with support from Rwanda Development Board and many other partners and donors.

When combined with the published figure of 604 mountain gorillas from the Virunga Massif as detected as of 2016, the global figure of known mountain gorillas increases to 1,063. This is a concrete proof that the tireless efforts of various stakeholders are slowly but surely making returns on investment of both energy finances and time since now the gorilla numbers have eclipsed the 1000 threshold required to declare a change in the status of these gorillas from being critically endangered to endangered

Qatar And The Rwanda Government Sign An MoU To Construct Rwanda’s Busegera Airport

Qatar And The Rwanda Government Sign An MoU To Construct Rwanda’s Busegera Airport

Qatar and the Rwanda government sign an MoU to construct Rwanda’s Kigali Bugesera airport. In the immediate aftermath of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, it was so had to imagine how Rwanda was going to uplift itself from this dreadful horror that ragged the country at its very core as there was nothing really left to see about Rwanda, it was a dark cloud of another failed state on the African continent in the making since the local society was disoriented to its very fabric and there was nothing but a state of hopelessness. However, with the change of guard as the Rwanda Patriotic Front taking power with Paul Kagame at the helm, Rwanda fortunes made a complete u-turn as the new regime wanted nothing but to prove wrong all those that had written this country off as a failed state.

Fast forward to 2019 Rwanda is one of the fastest developing countries on the African continent with an economy that surpasses many countries that have enjoyed relative peace for a relatively long period of time. Rwanda’s development is owed to many factors which include a stable political climate that has allowed Rwandans to settle and work towards the betterment of their motherland. Now 20 years after the horrific days that clumped this beautiful country with rolling hills and amazing people, Rwanda has become a country envied by many other African nations given its skyrocketing pace of development. If you had visited Rwanda only a few months after the genocide and you get to go back today, you can hardly recognize it because the country has undergone such a tremendous “corrective surgery” in that it’s now a shadow of its former self.

Rwanda development glory is highly infringed on its booming tourism sector and the Kagame government has had to make some bold financial decisions to heavily invest in Rwanda tourism so that it can earn more. Some of the investments made by the government include lucrative sponsorship deals with European footballing giants such as Arsenal and PSG with these deals lingering around 50 million dollars. However, some of these deals have received heavy criticism from economic analysts and some parts of the local population but the Rwanda Tourism Board has pointed out the these deals especially the Arsenal which in now in its 2nd year has led to an increase of 05% in tourists visiting Rwanda from UK which is a direct result from this deal and overall results show that in 2018 alone Rwanda earned 380 million dollars from tourism while the Rwanda Central Bank projects that by the end of this financial year, the country will earn 405 million dollars and 800$ million by 2024 hence making these deals more meaningful for the country to appreciate this effort.

As we speak today the Rwandan government has entered into a memorandum of understanding MOU with Qatar airways to construct a state of the art Kigali Bugesera International airport 25km out of Kigali city. In this MOU, Qatar airways will own 60% of the airport while Rwanda will own 40% of this 818 million dollar airport complex. This airport has been designed to have a capacity to hold over 7 million passenger at the end of the first phase of construction in 2020 and over 14 million passengers when it starts operating at full throttle upon completion in 2024. Bugesera Airport Company expects to complete the USD414 million first phase of construction of Kigali Bugesera International Airport by 2020, with the airport’s construction schedule on track. The Minister for Environment Vincent Biruta said he believes Kigali Bugesera International Airport will be the greenest airport in Africa, once complete. As the “country’s largest” infrastructure project, the airport’s designs were recently upgraded to meet “green standards”. Global Green Growth Institute DG Frank Rijsberman commented the new airport will be among the first airports to achieve ‘green’ certification. The airport, under construction, will be a net-zero emissions complex as a result of “energy and water efficiency and solar power”.
