Tales of Africans & marriage- “the two inseparable twins”

Tales of Africans & marriage- “the two inseparable twins”

Welcome back to the second segment of our Tales of Africans & Marriage the two inseparable twins. Just like I promise in our previous episode on this particular subject, let’s explore the marriage among the Baganda.

It’s a public secret that’s known to many that have visited Africa or stayed on this continent that marriage to Africans is something that’s highly treasured and the Baganda are no exception to this well-known rule as it’s known that they hold dear the sanctity of the institution of marriage.  To this regard, the Baganda parents and the greater society at the large had a makwanjula 2mmoth task of preparing their children right from a tender age for their marriage life in order to ensure that they had a successful marriage since it was a point of shame if any of the married partners failed to live up to the society’s expectations when it came to marriage.

In anticipation for marriage, all Baganda girls were expected to virgins before marriage and in case a girl conceived before marriage she caused a lot of shame and scorn on her family as it was considered an abomination to conceive while not legally married. The act of conceiving before marriage was called “okusobeza ku lugya” loosely translated this means “wronging at the family grounds or while still staying with your parents”. The girl who conceived before marriage was severely beaten first as her punishment for wronging the family grounds and also as an act to deter her young sisters from committing the same mistake as she has committed because the sisters now got to know that they would also be heavily punished just like their sister has been in case they ever made the same mistake

Before marriage, both boys and girls had to undergo sex education from their aunts for girls and boys from their uncles. The lessons were given to children when they reached the adolescent stage. For the girls, they underwent what we refer to as “visiting the bush”. During these visits to the bush, the girls were taught how to keep their bodies clean, manage menstrual cycles and taught how to appease their husbands sexually. Boys were also taught to provide for and lead their families, how to handle their wives and also fulfil their sexual desires.

Marriage

kwanjulaThere was nothing like courtship among the Baganda of long ago as fathers had the principal role of scouting for suitable marriage partners for their children and in case they had found a suitable partner for their child, marriage proposals were advanced by the child’s father to the family of the would-be bride or groom. For the would-be bride, she had no choice of not allowing the partner her father had chosen for her so it was quite common for young girls to be married to men old enough to be their fathers. When the families had agreed that their children were to marry each other, bride price was agreed upon and this mainly consisted of animals like goats and cows, jars of local brew, and what is called “omutwalo” for the girl’s father, “gomesi” for the bride’s mother and aunts, “kanzu” for the bride’s father, bride’s big brother who is called “omuko”.  The bride price was paid during an introduction ceremony called “kwanjula”. Kwanjula is a big feast which is organized at the bride’s family by her parents in order to see her off into her marriage life. During this feast, many people especially relatives of the were invited and there is a lot of eating and drinking involved as the bride’s family see off their daughter into marriage, it’s also done to congratulate the bride and her entire family for rising her properly until she has married.

Before the kwanjula ceremony, the bride to be aunt had to ensure that the bride to be was still a virgin. This was done on the wedding eve night, the bridegroom and bride had to consummate their love for the first time and this was done to determine the bride’s virginity. It was expected that the bride to be had to bleed as her virginity membrane was broken during the intercourse so the aunt would check for blood marks on the beddings and if she found them she would declare that the girl was a virgin. This caused for more celebration as the family jubilates surviving being shamed for having a girl who had lost her virginity before marriage and the bride’s aunt would get an extra goat as a token of appreciation for keeping niece a virgin till marriage.

The wedding

kwanjula 8After the Kwanjula the road to marriage isn’t yet done as there is the wedding to be conducted. The wedding is called embaga in the local Luganda dialect and this crowns the marriage ceremonies. This is conducted at the groom’s family grounds and its conducted to welcome the bride to the grooms family. On the wedding eve night, a ceremony called kasiki (easily relatable to the bachelor’s party) is conducted and during the kasiki all invited guests do merrymaking as they drink a lot of beer and dance the night off in order to welcome the new bride in the family. the wedding is conducted the following day with the bride and groom saying their marriage vows before God and man as well amidst all their parents, friends and other relatives. In order for a Kwanjula ceremony to take place, the groom and his family is expected to have a number of things presents and in our next episode here we will explore the some of these items that have to be availed by the groom in order to have a successful Kwanjula ceremony

In order to have an encounter with the Baganda to have more about their marriage, you can take advantage of our Kampala city tour which is a 1 day Kampala city tour. Uganda’s Cabinet Agrees to Allow a Feasibility Study Done on Murchison Falls For a Hydropower Plant Construction

Uganda’s Cabinet Agrees to Allow a Feasibility Study Done on Murchison Falls For a Hydropower Plant Construction

For Murchison falls is under the spotlight once again and this time around its not for all the right reasons. For the last half of this year, Murchison falls has been the centre of controversy given the government’s intention to build hydropower plant at these falls.

murchison falls 2These intentions first came to light in June 2019 when an application letter to the Electricity Regulation Authority (ERA) from a South African energy company named Bonang Power & energy ltd to conduct a feasibility study to assess the viability of constructing a 600Mw hydropower plant at Murchison falls had leaked to the general public.

This leakage before even ERA could even respond to the company sparked off a chain bitter responses from various wildlife stakeholders such as tour operators who sell Uganda tour experiences to Murchison falls as part of their Uganda wildlife safari packages in Murchison falls national park. Conservation agencies such as “Uganda Wildlife Authority were also concerned that this dam would be a detriment to the biodiversity of the greater Murchison falls ecosystem. In a bid to save this heritage the tourism fraternity carried out a campaign dabbed “Save Murchison Falls and also carried out an online drive in which they collected over 100000 signatures to a petition to the president of the Republic of Uganda in which they wanted the president to stop such a venture being undertaken.

save murchison 2The Ugandan legislators in the parliament also summoned the ministers concerned to give an official stand about the government’s position on this issue and the minister Mary Katutu who was available vehemently defended the government saying it wasn’t considering undertaking that proposal which was such a relief to the tourism and conservation stakeholders.

However, as tourism and conservation fraternity were still congratulating themselves for a job well done about saving Murchison, the State Minister for Tourism, Hon. Godfrey Kiwanda while addressing a stakeholders meeting convened by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) in Kampala on Wednesday 27, November 2019 revealed the plans of the government.

Kiwanda revealed that the government is in the process of drafting a paper to steer the feasibility study process only 3 months after the fire had seemed been put out. This again got everyone concerned up in arms.

Unlike the first time this time, it seemed like it was the cabinet that was interested in having this feasibility carried out. Only a few days after the revelations had been made by the tourism minister, the minister of state for energy Irene Muloni together with the cabinet Minister for tourism Ephraim Kamutu held a joint press conference in which they only gave the government official position about this matter which was in favour of conducting the feasibility.

2 days ago Uganda tourism fraternity composed of tour operators, conservationists and nature lovers make a Uganda tour to the top of Murchison Falls where they held a press conference and discussed reasons why the falls are important heritage site that shouldn’t be even up for discussion when it comes to sites suitable for construction of hydropower plants.

Given Murchison falls popularity and beauty it has been chosen by Rough guide a British travel guide like one of the best places to visit in 2020.

You can read that story here.

Murchison Falls National Park Chosen as One of the Best Places to Visit in 2020 By Rough Guide

What does history tell us all about this?

From people who have lived long enough to Uganda pass through phases of political bickering and immaturity, its believed that history is just repeating itself as this isn’t the first time Murchison falls is being at the center of controversy in regard to being a good site for a hydropower plant. A senior citizen who has seen it all says that the first time Murchison Falls was threatened with the proposal of building a dam near it, was in 1964 or thereabout.

Erisa Kironde the then all-powerful General Manager of Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) and a close friend of Prime Minister Apollo Milton Obote, came up with a proposal to build a dam on top of the falls, in the quest of increasing power supply. All sorts of arguments in support of and justification for the dam project were advanced by those in favour. They even argued that the dam was going to be built underground and therefore would not disturb the environment!!! Can you believe that? On the other hand, Katete who was the head of the Wildlife body under, which the docket of national parks management fell, including Murchison Falls because it is located in the heart of the aptly named Murchison Falls National Park.

murchison falls 5Katete and the like-minded together with conservationists wouldn’t hear any of it and put up a spirited fight against the construction of the dam. Interestingly they argued as we are doing today that, construction of the dam would interfere with the ecosystem, by interfering with the flow of water. The noise and fumes would chase away game and render the gazetted game park obsolete.

As a result, few if any tourists would care to visit the game park, which would adversely affect the national economy, which at that time was relying heavily on the booming tourism Industry. Many first-class hotels and luxury lodges had been built nationwide near and within national parks to cater to high-end tourists. Among such facilities were Masindi Hotel, Para Safari Lodge hence laying a strong foundation for the strong and vibrant Uganda tourism sector that is literally feeding the country as we speak today.

Incidentally, just like today, where the president is seemingly maintaining a deaf ear to all this, Obote literally did exactly the same thing back then only until it became so polarising that he had to appoint a Commission of inquiry to look into the matter and recommend solutions and I have every reason to believe we are heading in the same direction even this time around. To cut the long story short, the conservationist or Katete’s side won and Murchison falls lived to see another day which has and it has remained so for the last 50 years and still counting because I choose not to believe that its all over for this signature landmark that continues to make everyone who visits these falls ending up loving Uganda even more.

What do we stand to lose?

Being the world’s most powerful waterfalls, Murchison falls allure many Uganda wildlife safaris visitors to make Uganda trips to Murchison falls national park to see these majestic falls. This greatly emphasizes the point that why this national park is the most visited of all national parks in Uganda receiving over 100000 visitors in 2018.  Murchison falls National park is majorly visited by many tourists who opt to enjoy short Uganda tours due to limited time they have to enjoy a Uganda safari.

61513188_2410602912545819_6696396992819494912_oMurchison falls park being a destination that has a rich wildlife diversity and relatively close to Kampala just like Lake Mburo National Park is as well. These 2 parks are highly favored by these tourists on short Uganda safaris other than the other national parks which are a bit far away like Bwindi Impenetrable national park, Mgahinga gorilla national park and Kidepo Valley National Park which is the farthest of all. All these figures mean that the tourism sector Uganda’s biggest foreign exchange earner contributing 2.9% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product and 7.3% of the country’s GDP indirectly.

Fort Jesus Kenya’s historical landmark- Kenya Safari News

Fort Jesus Kenya’s historical landmark- Kenya Safari News

When it comes Africa safaris, every traveller wishes to visit Kenya for a magical Africa wildlife safari given Kenya’s rich wildlife biodiversity in several of its Kenya wildlife tour national parks. However, Kenya has way too much to offer beyond just Kenya wildlife tours given the diverse range of Kenya tour attractions which include national parks, Masai culture, marine wildlife attraction, a rich coastal tradition and history and recreational attractions.

fort jesus 2In the next series of our Kenya safari stories, we are going to explore some of the other attractions and activities besides traditional Kenya wildlife safari activities that will intrigue you while on your Kenya holiday.

Lets kick off these series by exploring Kenya’s Mombasa historical site of fort Jesus.

Fort Jesus is located along 04o03’46”S 39o40’47”E in Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa on an island also known as Mombasa. Built between 1593 to 1596, by the Portuguese by the orders of King Philip I of Portugal, fort Jesus is a testimony to the first European trial to rule east Africa as a way of controlling the newly discovered Indian ocean trade route between Europe and Asia.

This fort was designed by an Italian architect Cairato, while the master builder was Gaspar Rodrigues. The fort was Cairato’s last overseas work. Although the design of Fort Jesus is an example of Renaissance, the masonry techniques, building materials and labour are believed to have been provided by the local Swahili people  The fort was built in the shape of a man (viewed from the air) and is roughly square, with four bulwarks at its corners. The fort is considered a masterpiece of late Renaissance military fortification.

fort jesus 3Fort Jesus was captured and recaptured at least nine times between 1631, when the Portuguese lost it to the Sultan Yusuf ibn al- Hassan of Mombasa, and 1895 when it fell under British rule and was converted into a prison. After the Portuguese recaptured it from the Sultan in 1632, they refurbished it and built more fortifications, subsequently making it harder for the fort to fall. The fort was subject to an epic two-year siege from 1696-98 by the Omani Arabs, led by Saif bin Sultan.  The capture of the fort marked the end of Portuguese presence on the coast, although they briefly captured and re-occupied it between 1728 and 1729 with the help of the Swahili city states. The fort fell under local rule from 1741 to 1837, when it was again captured by the Omanis and used as a barracks, before its occupation by the British in 1895, after the declaration of the Protectorate of Kenya.

Fort Jesus was declared a national park in 1958, and in 2011, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and highlighted as one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military fortifications. The fort is Mombasa’s most visited tourist attraction.

You can easily visit Fort Jesus after or before your traditional Kenya wildlife safaris adventure since this fort is located about 15km or a 40-minute drive from the Moi international airport hence making it a great destination for an epic day tour adventure in Kenya.

Have A Cultural Encounter With The Original Inhabitants Of The Mgahinga And Bwindi Forests For The Last 1000 Years.

Have A Cultural Encounter With The Original Inhabitants Of The Mgahinga And Bwindi Forests For The Last 1000 Years.

When it comes to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, what easily comes to the minds of so many people are the exhilarating gorilla tours that give gorilla tours Uganda fanatics a memorable encounter with these magnificent beings in their natural habitat.

We can never dispute the fact that gorilla trekking is the major tourist activity in Mgahinga national park however, there are more thrilling Uganda safari attractions in Mgahinga that are usually overshadowed by the glorious Uganda gorilla trekking safaris that  happen within the confinements of Mgahinga gorilla national park Uganda.

Its upon this fact that I would like to base my next series of stories on this platform to shine a light on some of these attractions that have always remained lurking in the shadows of the mighty gorillas which are the epitome tourist attractions in Mgahinga gorilla park.

Let’s kick off our series by looking at the Batwa.

Who are the Batwa?

batwa pple

The Batwa people are also known as the Twa people.  The Batwa are believed to be the earliest inhabitants of East Africa as some historians and anthropologists have dated their ancestry in this region to as far back as 60,000 years ago. In Uganda the Batwa are minority ethnic group of people with a population of only 6200 people as of 2014 population census results.

They are also commonly referred to as pygmies due to their short size heights. A fully grown Mutwa on average has about 4 feet or less of height and this makes them shorter than any other person of average height in east African region. The Batwa are the original custodians and guardians of the Mgahinga forests as well as those of Bwindi Forest National Park, they lived a life that entirely depended on the forests as they hunted only what they could eat and gathered fruits from these forest. When they got sick, they still turned to the forest to provide them with herbs that were to cure them of their ailments. Long ago, the Batwa also lived a nomadic kind of lifestyle where they built temporary huts using tree branches and covering them with leaves as they would easily migrate from one area to another looking for better fruits and animals to hunt.

However, in 1991, when Bwindi was declared a national park, these people were evicted from the forests and now live on the peripherals of this forest park. In Mgahinga you can still find the Batwa within the national park confinements hence these people co-exist peacefully and harmoniously with other wild dwellers of this national park which include wild gorillas.

Meet the Batwa

batwa people

With the presence of the Batwa within the park, you can easily  have a Uganda cultural safari experience as part of Uganda safari activities in Mgahinga. During this activity, you will understand the way the Batwa used to live in the forest jungles, how they hunted, gathered their fruits, you will also be introduced to the jungle clinic where you will learn about the different herbs that the Batwa used to heal their ailments all of which are present in the forest.

This trail is carried out within the boundaries of Mgahinga National Park on the foot hills of mount Sabinyo and mount Muhavura. At the climax of the trail, you will be led to the Garama cave, this cave is 342 meters long and 14 meters deep and is found below a plateau that lies north of the park about 3km from Ntebeko park offices, the Garama cave holds a lot of cultural and social significance to the Batwa community because before their eviction from the forests, the Batwa used this cave as a council chamber and also a hide out for their warriors after they had raided their neighbouring communities. As of today, the Garama cave is a habitat for bats, the Batwa only use it as stage to showcase their music that are usually performed at the end of the Batwa trail walks.

Batwa-Peopl

During this musical performance, the Batwa will reminisce about their good old days in the forest and the agony of being evicted from their ancestral lands that came with the creation of Mgahinga national park. The entire Batwa trail costs 80$ and lasts for about 4 hours giving you ample time to enjoy and learn a thing or two from earliest inhabitants of East Africa. Being one of the most marginalized groups of people, part of the proceeds that are gained from this activity go directly in improving the lives of these people through construction and funding social infrastructures like schools and health centres within this community.

On a visit to Mgahinga gorilla park, you can choose to stay in any of the Uganda safari accommodations in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park such as Mount Gahinga Lodge, Lake Chahafi Resort, Mucha Hotel, Travellers Rest Hotel and Kisoro Tourist Hotel. Six-Year-Old Briton Ashleen Becomes the Youngest Girl to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro

Six-Year-Old Briton Ashleen Becomes the Youngest Girl to Summit Mount Kilimanjaro

Its old English saying that says “never judge a book by its cover”, I have found this saying more befitting for today’s story given its one that’s inspired by someone beating all odds to achieve something momentous that isn’t easily .  In the world of hikers, hiking Kilimanjaro is no joke given that this hike takes you from less than 1500ft above sea level to over 19340ft in less than a week, this is so mean feet because at this height you’re at Africa highest point getting to this point by no means a thing you would easily to any six-year-old child to do unless you’re dealing with a kid that’s so passionate want to put their young adrenaline energies to test with this cruel but awesome experience.

Ashleen Mandrick a six-year girl from West Sussex UK, I have no doubt that has perfectly cement the fact not all “men” are created  equal as some are created destined for greatness than  because you don’t  need to be a fortune teller after reading this story to know that

Ashleen Mandrick inspired by a family hiking trip after skiing in the Alps earlier this year, she also wanted to take on a bigger hiking challenge and Kilimanjaro was an obvious choice given she was also motivated by the desire to be at the top of her mummy’s continent since her mother grew up from Africa.

All good things come at a cost

Organizing for Ashleen’s hike was no easy tusk given the fact that the Tanzanian authorities don’t permit anyone below the age of 10 to ascend this freestanding mountain hence it required Victoria Mandrick- Ashleen’s mother to acquire a special permit for Ashleen to be allowed to ascend the mountain.

The road to the top

Ashleen together with her brother Nicolas aged 11 and mother victoria 45 a medical doctor began their conquest of the Kilimanjaro mountain on the 24th September 2019 following the Machame route and their ascent to the top took only 6 days. Ashleen was so intrigued by the hike because she loved the attention and the whole adventure: the rocky parts; the atmosphere – chatting and singing with the guides and porters all the way to the summit; dancing in the camps; meeting other climbers; ‘helping’ the cook prepare dinner in the evenings; the flora and fauna – she had a little book about local vegetation where she was checking out the plants she encountered. She was also very happy to stand on top of ‘mummy’s continent’.” Said Ms Victoria

Upon successful completion Ashleen was so pleased with her accomplishment in that she decided to go back for a second round and this time around they used the Umbwe route, considered the ‘hardest and steepest trail’, Victoria said, adding: “According to information given to us at registration at Kilimanjaro National Park, no child under 12 (or even a bit older) has ever attempted it.” Ashleen’s brother Nicholas, 11, accompanied her on both occasions and again on October 12, becoming the youngest person to reach the summit 2 times in a two-week period.

What next for this climbing protégée?

After returning, Ashleen said ‘It was amazing to make two climbs. It was the best thing I have ever done.” After successful overcoming Kilimanjaro, Ashleen has her sights set on being able to ascend the tallest mountain on the planet mountain Everest someday.

Rwanda Development Board Announces a New 3 Year Sponsorship Deal with a European Football Giant- Paris Saint Germain

In its continued bid to make Rwanda one of Africa’s leading tourist destinations especially for high end or luxury tourists, Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has had to part with hefty investments in order to realize its dream coming true.

PSG LADY TEAMApart from near-perfect social infrastructures such as roads that are spotless and without any inconceivable potholes, Rwanda has had to engage in aggressive and expensive marketing strategies in order to lure in their intended tourists to visit this country of 1000 rolling hills.

One of these marketing strategies include having endorsement deals with internationally recognized brands. Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has chosen to partner with internationally recognized footballing clubs in Europe as their favourite brands in order to market destination Rwanda to their global fan base which is counted in tens of millions of people who support these teams globally. This campaign kicked off last with RBD partnering with one of England’s biggest soccer club Arsenal where they penned a 3-year deal is believed to be around 39 million dollars.

This deal saw the London based club jersey rebranded with a Visit Rwanda campaign logo on their shirt sleeves as well as other Rwanda branding campaign material and messages put around and inside the club’s stadium.  This deal was received with mixed reactions both at home and abroad with critics saying the government was shelling out so much money in international branding yet the country is still considered a 3rd world state with a GDP per capita of about 700$ only.

However, only after a year elapsing on this deal, the RDB is saying that the deal was a worthwhile adventure as the country realized an increase of 05% in tourists visiting Rwanda from UK which is a direct result from this deal and overall results show that in 2018 alone Rwanda earned 380 million dollars from tourism while the Rwanda central bank projects that by the end of this financial year, the country will earn 405 million dollars and 800$ million by 2024 hence making more meaning ful for the country to appreciate this effort.

With all these glaring results, the RDB has gained confidence about its strategy and now has penned down yet another lucrative deal with another footballing giant club in France Pairs Saint Germain. This deal that’s believed to be lingering around 8-11 million dollars according to Reuters will the PSG Women Team jersey branded with a visit Rwanda campaign logo. This deal will also see Rwanda getting branded in the club’s main stadium for 3 years.

PSG ladies teamAfter signing the agreement, Ms Clare Akamanzi, the RDB chief executive officer said: “We invest part of our tourism revenues in strategic collaborations such as the one with Paris St Germain because we understand the positive effect they have on the overall perception of the country globally.”
