Qatar And The Rwanda Government Sign An MoU To Construct Rwanda’s Busegera Airport

Qatar and the Rwanda government sign an MoU to construct Rwanda’s Kigali Bugesera airport. In the immediate aftermath of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, it was so had to imagine how Rwanda was going to uplift itself from this dreadful horror that ragged the country at its very core as there was nothing really left to see about Rwanda, it was a dark cloud of another failed state on the African continent in the making since the local society was disoriented to its very fabric and there was nothing but a state of hopelessness. However, with the change of guard as the Rwanda Patriotic Front taking power with Paul Kagame at the helm, Rwanda fortunes made a complete u-turn as the new regime wanted nothing but to prove wrong all those that had written this country off as a failed state.

Fast forward to 2019 Rwanda is one of the fastest developing countries on the African continent with an economy that surpasses many countries that have enjoyed relative peace for a relatively long period of time. Rwanda’s development is owed to many factors which include a stable political climate that has allowed Rwandans to settle and work towards the betterment of their motherland. Now 20 years after the horrific days that clumped this beautiful country with rolling hills and amazing people, Rwanda has become a country envied by many other African nations given its skyrocketing pace of development. If you had visited Rwanda only a few months after the genocide and you get to go back today, you can hardly recognize it because the country has undergone such a tremendous “corrective surgery” in that it’s now a shadow of its former self.

Rwanda development glory is highly infringed on its booming tourism sector and the Kagame government has had to make some bold financial decisions to heavily invest in Rwanda tourism so that it can earn more. Some of the investments made by the government include lucrative sponsorship deals with European footballing giants such as Arsenal and PSG with these deals lingering around 50 million dollars. However, some of these deals have received heavy criticism from economic analysts and some parts of the local population but the Rwanda Tourism Board has pointed out the these deals especially the Arsenal which in now in its 2nd year has led to an increase of 05% in tourists visiting Rwanda from UK which is a direct result from this deal and overall results show that in 2018 alone Rwanda earned 380 million dollars from tourism while the Rwanda Central Bank projects that by the end of this financial year, the country will earn 405 million dollars and 800$ million by 2024 hence making these deals more meaningful for the country to appreciate this effort.

As we speak today the Rwandan government has entered into a memorandum of understanding MOU with Qatar airways to construct a state of the art Kigali Bugesera International airport 25km out of Kigali city. In this MOU, Qatar airways will own 60% of the airport while Rwanda will own 40% of this 818 million dollar airport complex. This airport has been designed to have a capacity to hold over 7 million passenger at the end of the first phase of construction in 2020 and over 14 million passengers when it starts operating at full throttle upon completion in 2024. Bugesera Airport Company expects to complete the USD414 million first phase of construction of Kigali Bugesera International Airport by 2020, with the airport’s construction schedule on track. The Minister for Environment Vincent Biruta said he believes Kigali Bugesera International Airport will be the greenest airport in Africa, once complete. As the “country’s largest” infrastructure project, the airport’s designs were recently upgraded to meet “green standards”. Global Green Growth Institute DG Frank Rijsberman commented the new airport will be among the first airports to achieve ‘green’ certification. The airport, under construction, will be a net-zero emissions complex as a result of “energy and water efficiency and solar power”.
